Network Marketing - Say Less to More People

Network Marketing is really about Saying Less to More People than saying the "right" thing. This fun and true story is about how prospects always see your opportunity when it's right for them.

Definition: MLM Gangster - someone who is making “gangster” money in network marketing.

After sitting half the afternoon working on the computer replying to email, prospecting via internet marketing, calling leads, and talking with distributors, this “MLM Gangster” was ready for a break!

Perfectly timed, I noticed a step-aerobics class was taking place in about 30 minutes at the local gym! Just a clothes change and out the door with plenty of time to spare – except for the phone call I just Had to take from a distributor which took ten minutes. Okay, “now I’m gonna be late!” I think to myself as I jump into the car, planning my route around the evening traffic. “Hmm, it’s a ten minute drive and I am 5 minutes late” – but despite the odds I was some how determined to get to the class before it began without speeding - at least not speeding too much over the limit!

So I headed out determined! Miraculously for a week day evening in a big, big city traffic was strangely light. Where was everyone? Graciously I am granted breaks in traffic and traffic lights which seemed almost unreal. O well, “just go with it” I said to myself out loud. Besides, nothing can deter a determined goal right?

Finally, I arrive at the gym. Out of the car I scramble and head towards the back of the building. A quick glance at my watch and Ooo I am ten minutes late but for some reason, the class had not begun! Yes!!! The power of intention! Just like in business – make a decision and the world conforms around you they say – this must be what it’s like!

Class began and about 5 minutes into it, I wonder why I wanted to be there at all and why did I try so hard to not miss the class? Was I nuts? 1 – 2 – 3 – 4- why did I learn to count 5-6-7-8 which way are we going now and why am I facing left and everyone else is facing right? Is this class over yet?

Several more minutes into Step Class 201 and I’m hot, sweating profusely and partially dizzy from the turn, touch, step when I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror!

The reflection is almost nightmarish – the color of my face and chest is blending in with the bright red wall behind me! In fact, I’m not really sure if that black and gray blur is even me – it’s all so surreal except for the burning sensation in my thighs! Now that I am past the visual shock, all I can think of is how I hope and pray the aerobics instructor doesn’t send me to the nurse like my 6th grade gym teacher did for fear that my bright red complexion equaled a medical condition.

After my mind calms down and we’ve all been exercising for another 20 minutes, I seem to really have the hang of this step-aerobics thing. As my ego takes over I think to myself, “Maybe I could teach this class!” “Yes! I am GOOD at this!” Of course reality kicked in when I slipped on the step, startling myself, and bringing my mind back to the realization that I won’t be teaching any class soon!

Then, finally, it’s over and I survived! However, in addition to my lovely red glow and sweaty face, I now have wonderful sweat marks under my boobs. “Lovely” I think and it’s a good thing I won’t see anyone I know other than my gym friends who are used to me like this. As far as I can figure my gym friends must think I always look this way and wouldn’t recognize me outside of the gym. Of course every-single-time, without fail, that I think “I hope I don’t see anyone I know” I do and this time was no exception.

After about five steps from existing the aerobics room of “Counting to the Beat for Physical Torture and Mind Boggling Activities” I hear my name and I hear it being said LOUDLY!

“SIIGGGNNNEEEE!” And there standing right next to me is a gal I happened to meet the week before at a training class on making first impressions and dressing to impress. Boy, she must think I completely failed the entire training class and may even nominate me for that show “What Not to Wear!” But come on, it is the gym after all. But of course, glancing at her, still in her professional business attire, I am feeling a little small and very, very red as the color has not diminished and has possibly even spread to my arms.

Further, I also had given this gal a CD explaining our network marketing business at the event I met her at making the whole situation even more awkward. Only because I don’t have my confident assured game face on, I have more of a vulnerable embarrassing feeling in my sweaty clothes and WILD hair to match.

I’m just not prepared!

As I am totally into myself about how ridiculous I look, she seems completely pleased and excited to see me.

“I listened to your CD she says”

“O good, what did you think?”

“I loved it! The information was so well done and what is so funny is that I was asking for something just like this to come into my life!”

She continues as I stand there now glowing in the possibility of where this conversation is headed, “I mean I can’t believe it is just so great and I am ready to start. I tried to call you earlier but you must have been on the phone. So what’s do I do next? I heard something on the CD that talked about a Fast Start program where I can start at the top correct? Can I start there?”

“Yes, yes, you can” I say. My spirits lifted, having a desire to look around the room to see if it’s real or did I actually pass out in class and this is all just a dream!

Nope, it’s all for real! So then I say, “Call me when you get home and we’ll get you signed up with that Fast Start Program”.

“O great”, she says. “I am so glad I saw you here tonight.”

“Me too” I say. “I’ll talk with you in a little bit then.”

“Goodbye!”

YES! Wow! I love this business. Gleaming in a different way as I leave the gym to the car temporarily forgetting how WILD I was looking.

Deep in happy thoughts as I was driving home, I realized (once again) that it doesn’t really matter in network marketing how we look or what we have to say because as always, the right prospective MLM Gangster always sees this business and sees the opportunity every time when the timing is right for them - even when you look like a tomato disguised with scarecrow hair and sweat-stained gym clothes!

Building your network marketing business is more about getting out there and getting through the numbers than always looking the “right” way and saying the “right” things! So, get out there you gangster of opportunity and make some gangster friends!

In Network Marketing, It’s All About the Timing

Let me begin by telling you, I hate getting my hair done or any other pampering service. I know many women love to go and get your hair cut, colored, nails done. You consider it a day of pampering, I consider it a complete day of bodily torture with scissors, tin foil and sharp instruments that have funny names and even odder applications.

Some kind of nightmare with the promise of “beauty” set in a salon setting complete with toxic smells and chemicals which make yours eyes water. O joy. Where’s the fun in that?

Maybe it’s because of all the torture I endured in the 80’s when my mom would attempt to give me a home permanent. Curlers flying, glass breaking, and a head full of curls representing more of the 1970’s afro than the 1980’s body curls!

But whatever it is about a day of torture, I just don’t care for it – in truth, I love watching those “reality” make over shows because the end result for the participants is that they always look great, yet I am always left with the worrisome thought that there is a definite price for beauty!

The only thing that calms my mind about going through a day of torture is the possibility of talking to the ladies about our product line or discussing network marketing and the benefits of making a side income.

So every few months when I drag myself in for torture, I have something to look forward to out of the whole ordeal. Unfortunately, my last visit did not go so well, not well at all . . .

My hairstylist, a great gal from Ohio is a fit, trim, attractive senior citizen and is a whiz with the hair color after 45 years of torturing others. She has three grown kids which she adores and she loves to talk. Great. I think a talker! Talkers are wonderful promoters in the network marketing industry and everyone needs a good promoter or two to do business with.

Besides, she’s close to retirement age and has mentioned before that she’d like to supplement her income.

Okay. So, I was ready to talk shop. But today WAS NOT the day for her. When I arrived she was clearly upset which as all “MLM Gangsters [a.k.a. network marketers]” know, an upset disgruntled torturer is not the kind of torturer you want!

Down . . . . I sit in her swivel chair – how convenient I think to have a chair which turns round and round - I’m sure only to disorient a victim. The little white paper goes around my neck followed by the Velcro black cape although a little too tight today as I gag and choke.

“O’ I’m so sorry” she says as she loosens up the Velcro allowing the oxygen to flow back to my already limited brain.

“I’m having a bad day” she continues.

No Really? I didn’t notice I think to myself wishing my cell phone would ring so I could escape my capture.

But, no such luck! They (other network marketing gangsters) always seem know when a family gangster member is about to be put through the ringer and disappear.

The torture session begins:

“Same as last time?” she asks.

“Yes that would be great.” I reply.

“So how have you been?” She asks with a glazed look which I can tell she has way too much on her mind to really hear the answer.

“Fine” I say, “but how are you doing? What’s bothering you?”

This of course opens up the flood gates.

She proceeds to tell me her recent family trouble which includes her kids and the ex-husband of 20 years. The story continues on and by now we are to the combing-out-of-my-hair process after the color job and yes I am still sitting in the infamous chair of torture.

Pull, comb, pull, eyes watering, she’s talking

Pull, comb, pull

My head is throbbing from the pain

I once heard from an ex hairstylist to the stars that famous women would pay him over $1,000 to comb out their hair! One Thousand Dollars! Please, just shave me bald I am thinking!

“The whole situation just made me SOO MAD” she states as she is pulling out the tangle.

My head can tell I am thinking.

She continues with her story and it’s not that I’m so terribly polite that I don’t want to stop her - it’s because she’s talking so much I can’t slow her down!

Finally we’re through the comb out and on to the cut. Sharp scissors in hand, close to the jugular!

“I am not forgiving him this time!”

Great I am thinking. Get me out of here.

Finally, the hair cut is done! Whew!

“Would you like me to blow it dry and style it for you today?” she says with the dazed look in her eyes.

“No, no thanks.” I say, “Not today. I have to get going but thanks for the color and cut.”

Needless to say there were no conversations on the subject of business, making money or on possible products to buy.

That day I was there with my hairstylist was just NOT the day for her and there are many times in our network marketing travels where we are just taken back to the realization that making a sale or talking about our opportunity is not about us – it’s always about the other person and when it’s right for them or even if it is for them!

Yet, looking back over the years, the fact that never ceases to amaze me is that for all the “not right” times and all the “not for me” answers, the business model still works and for every person who is not ready to talk or to register, there are several who are so we all have to keep on going!

That day, I was just glad I survived the whole torture session and filled my mind with hopeful thoughts of returning in a couple of months to try the conversation again when just maybe the timing was better for her.

Network Marketing Tales from the Crib – It’s All In How You Look At It!

Network Marketing Tales from the Crib – It’s All In How You Look At It!

This Network Marketing Tale from the Crib occurred several years ago now but still stands out in my mind as if it were yesterday and for all of you who are new in network marketing, don’t worry if a version of this story has not quite occurred in your own network marketing career yet – because it probably will!

Just keep in mind that sometimes others outside your network marketing ring may view you as what we call MLM Gangsters! What is a MLM Gangster you may be asking? An MLM Gangster is someone who is making “gangster” money in network marketing as Kim Klaver calls it. As far as I have figured out, the assumptions of other people are that your business could not possibly be real as how could you earn so much money with so little time - you must be doing something illegal such as gangster activity because that’s the only way they could figure out you could earn that much income!

Here’s how this particular MLM Gangster situation went down:

My husband Karl and I had been full-time network marketers making “gangster” money for several years when I had wandered out of my home-based business crib of safety out into the real world to go to the health-food store. Of course getting there I had taken the necessary steps (driving around in circles and stopping in various locations) to avoid being followed because that’s what gangsters do . . .

While at the health-food store, I happened across a woman whom I worked with at my former place of employment before I went “underground”. She asked me how I was doing and I replied very sincerely and with a big smile “Just great!” and I returned the pleasantries asking her how things were going with her and her job.

She instantly gave me her reply which was startlingly stern and the volume of her voice was at least a couple of notches higher than even necessary, a volume which made it very clear to anyone within 20 feet that she was going to be heard no matter what! As she said,

“THINGS ARE GOING VERY WELL AND I AM NOT IN ANY WAY INTERESTED IN LEAVING. I REALLY LOVE MY JOB AND LOVE WHAT I AM DOING AND I AM NOT INTERESTED IN DOING ANYTHING ELSE AT THIS TIME!”

Okay? What prompted this reaction I asked myself? Do I suddenly look hard-of-hearing because I quit my job? or Do I have an application attached to my blouse? I thought. Or do I have a huge sign on my shirt that says “MLM Gangster, take cover, hide your children, escape the premises or you too will be part of the gangster “administration”!

I stood there for a few minutes just staring (eyes wider than usual) and blinking with thoughts running through my head like had I ever propositioned her about the business or tried to sell her on anything or even told her what we were doing? No! Not once ever! I was sure of it!

Hmm? She must have found out from a “squealer” outside of the family that seemed to feel the need to “rat me out”. Obviously, she needed to make it very clear to me that she was not interested and boy did I get it!

After I emerged out of my daze I said in a slightly dejected and definitely stunned and smaller gangster voice, “Well that’s great. I’m glad things are going well for you there.” The conversation continued with small talk about the store we were in and eating right and a bunch of nothingness that I do not clearly remember as I was in such a blur.

We said our goodbyes and our good lucks and I walked off still feeling stunned feeling like what the Italian gangsters would refer to as a babbo - a dope, an idiot, a useless underling. At first, I began to wonder if what I was doing was wrong in some way and I worried that people were going to react to me strangely when they saw me around town – weird and uncomfortable and even worse talk to me very, very loudly.

I continued shopping with these thoughts running through my head and then I suddenly snapped out of it. What was I thinking?

In the last three years Karl and I had changed our lives drastically. We were healthier physically than we have ever been. We were building our own business and had gotten ourselves out of debt. We have moved into a house that was nicer than either of us have ever lived in. We were driving a vehicle that was nicer than we could ever have afforded on our own. I had quit my job and Karl was out of his job too and we will never work for anyone else again and our time will be our own!

Then I started to think about her life in comparison and I am truly happy for her that she loves her career and what she is doing and I respect her completely for that because we all know the gangster lifestyle is not for everyone.

However, I could also speculate that if she does not change that
1. She will probably continue to work for a company that will only pay her a limited amount that most likely will never exceed six figures (especially since she is a female in a male dominated business).
2. She will have to ask every time she wants to go on vacation or take time off and that will be limited and not at her discretion (forced vacations are common in her industry) and
3. She will work in buildings that are laden with toxic chemicals that are supposedly “safe”. And that she could possibly work for that company for 10, 15, 20 years and possibly be laid off in one day with no concern from that company about what her future is and probably be laid off for making too much money! (MLM Gangsters are never laid off for making too much money!)

Hmm? By the time I made it through the check out lane I didn’t feel like the “babbo” any more. I was just grateful that we were one of the many Big Earners in the network marketing family of gangsters!

Don’t forget the ice!

Why My Aunt Thinks We Are MLM Gangsters!

Anyone who has been in network marketing for any amount of time eventually figures out that network marketing is not for everyone. Of course shortly after and even more importantly we also become very aware that EVERYONE is not for network marketing!

The realization that someone is usually not the right person comes of course as the all-telling hindsight. Hindsight after we’ve spent numerous hours talking with and prospecting someone because we believe that they are the ONE! Hindsight making us question our sanity as to why we thought they were the ONE in the first place because if we really got down to it and were really honest with ourselves, they met none of the qualifications of the ONE. And in the most telling of situations, often times the ONE who we thought was the ONE was a family member!

When my husband and I were just starting out, I have to admit, I thought everyone was the ONE - We had the perfect business that anyone could do! The perfect products that everyone needed! And the easiest business model everyone could do!

But just like those gangsters who have walked before me down the network marketing path, they’ve all realize that some people just never get the vision and others to this day just think we are MLM Gangsters living off of illegally made money from one of those Pyramid Scams.

My first experience with the MLM Gangster lifestyle came after about two years in the business. With our network marketing success, we bought a home almost twice the size of our previous house, we were driving a vehicle paid for by our company, we had replaced our combined six figure a year incomes and my husband and I were working completely from home.

This gangster lifestyle had been going on for over a year when my Aunt says to me in the car when we are alone:

“Siggy” she says (this is what she calls me and she can get away with it because she is an elementary school teacher!)”Siggy, is what you’re doing one of those pyramid scams?” In her cutest, most sincere voice ever.

I am thinking, okay, I have explained this business to her a number of times. What doesn’t she get? And is it worth my energy any more to proceed and try to convince her again that what we are doing is legal?

I concede to her and painfully finally say, “Yes. Yes it is one of those pyramid scams.” For no other reason than to see what would happen.

Most surprisingly, she is overly content and happy with this answer as she smiles brightly like an angel who finally understands after all these years what it is that we are doing which only makes me want to repute my answer and try, try again but I give in and keep my mouth shut to keep my own good sense in tact.

Relieved in the answer she gets, we get out of the car and proceed into the pizza restaurant to pay for six large pizzas for the family with the money I got from my pyramid scam business. I momentarily felt like Al Capone. The Boss of Bosses! The Capo di tutti capi! The ONE! If the guy at the cash register only knew!

As my imagination simmered and we are walking out of the restaurant, she puts her hand on my shoulder and says “Don’t worry. I won’t tell anyone.” Gee thanks I’m thinking in my head now I won’t have to “go on the lam”.

There was a time in my network-marketing career where I would have fought her question tooth and nail. Explaining in my most versed and prepared speeches about how network marketing is not a scam and going on in about all the reasons why – with references and footnotes to boot.

But in that afternoon with my Aunt, I was once again struck with the affirmation that some people just won’t ever get it and will be happier in believing what they want to believe about the network marketing industry. And, from my aunt’s point of view, there may be some real reasons for her need to believe that it is a scam.

Maybe it’s because my Uncle is a very successful, educated and talented architect and she is a school teacher and that they have to work non-stop and we don’t?. Maybe it’s because we make more than they do, despite their credentials and we actually do less? Maybe it just doesn’t make sense that it could work?

So, sometimes it’s just better to walk on by, let these things pass, keep “the books closed”, and keep it Cosa Nostra or “all in the network marketing family”!
